Trimming: ripple, roll, slip and slide

The four kinds of trim and when to use each.

Updated 7 October 2026

Trimming changes where a clip starts and ends. There are four kinds.

Ripple

Drag the end of a clip. Everything after it moves to follow, so the timeline gets shorter or longer. This is the normal trim on the storyline.

Roll

Drag the cut between two clips. One clip gets longer and the other shorter by the same amount, so the total length does not change. Use it to move a cut without disturbing the rest.

Slip

Keep the clip where it is on the timeline but change which part of the source it shows. Good for finding the right moment inside a shot of the same length.

Slide

Move a clip along the timeline while its neighbours stretch and shrink to fill the space. The clip keeps its content and length.

Precise trims

Select an edit point and use the arrow keys to nudge by a frame, or Shift and the arrow keys to nudge by 10 frames. Up and Down jump between edit points.
