Hardware encoding

How Kaptcho uses your graphics chip to export faster, and when it falls back to software.

Updated 7 October 2026

Kaptcho can use special video hardware in your computer to export faster.

What it uses

  • Mac: VideoToolbox.
  • Windows and Linux: NVENC on NVIDIA cards, Quick Sync on Intel, and AMF on AMD.

Automatic

Kaptcho looks for hardware when it opens and uses it for H.264 and HEVC exports when it can. If there is none, or the hardware cannot do what you asked, Kaptcho switches to software encoding on its own.

Hardware or software

Hardware is much faster. Software can give slightly smaller files at the same quality. For most videos you will not see the difference.

If an export fails on hardware

Update your graphics driver, then try again. In the export panel you can turn hardware encoding off to use software instead. See Export failed.
